Early Christmas Present for NHS Bishop Auckland General Hospital

21 December 2011

Alliance Medical, Europe’s leading independent imaging provider, today announced plans to bring a state-of-the-art scanner to its Bishop Auckland site.

In line with Alliance Medical’s belief in the importance of “intelligent imaging”, the replacement scanner will provide higher quality images within shorter scanning times, equipping radiologists, clinicians and patients with vital knowledge to make informed decisions around patient care.

Based in the NHS Bishop Auckland General Hospital, the replacement scanner - a 1.5 Tesla Siemens Avanto - will provide better quality images faster with low acoustic noise levels.  It has been carefully designed to be as patient friendly as possible with a low-to-the-floor table position of 18” making it accessible for everyone.

The short bore of the magnet and the option to scan nearly all examinations out feet first mean it is well tolerated by claustrophobic patients.  For obese patients, the table supports 250 kgs (31 stone), without table movement restrictions. Additional imaging will now be available at the unit, including advanced body imaging, for example of the liver and small bowel; breast and cardiac imaging and contrast enhanced angiography of blood vessels.

Commenting on the new service, David Loasby, Business Development Director of Alliance Medical, said:

'We are pleased to be extending our services at the NHS Bishop Auckland General Hospital. This cutting edge technology will enable us to produce higher quality images, helping local clinical teams make accurate and speedy diagnoses through a process which is more comfortable for patients. The new service further cements the partnership between Alliance Medical and County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust”.

Robin Mitchell, Trust Medical Director added:

“We’re delighted that Bishop Auckland Hospital is benefitting from this upgrade to its MRI scanner.  It will give us better images, while offering the patient a more comfortable experience. This is great news for the hospital and for the community.”
